Let's get this out of the way right now: I am at best average at both but love riding each.
I have a group of friends that ride exclusively offroad and they are extremely fast. Large rocks, boulders, jagged uphill waterfalls, deep sand washes and single track do not slow these guys down. They almost never ride MX and do not like to do long jumps. However, when they do ride MX, they are still pretty fast.
MX riders who come out to ride the technical desert areas are fundamentally great riders but take a while to get used to the obstacles they don't see on a MX track.
bottom line: I feel that offraod riding improves MX skills and MX riding improves offroad skills.
We have several factory sponsored offroad racers living in Phoenix (Destry Abbott, Steve Hatch, Kelly Yancey) and they are all very fast on an MX track.
